I'm sorry, but I find the score both young AND unsophisticated. It's a
show-off score, but without any heart and without any soul. I have the same
problem with La Chiusa. This stuff is like high school and college to me, with
no originality, just derivative of Sondheim as so much
of today's musical theater is. Even in the earliest Sondheim you can hear that
distinctive voice of his. Jason Robert Brown has no distinctive voice and
writes awkwardly both musically and
lyrically. His score is harmful to Parade and never moves the show forward or
involves you
emotionally. And someone please explain to me what Farewell My Lila has to do
with anything?
I thought I was watching Shenandoah for a scary minute. As a scene or period
setter it is confusing and doesn't work at all. Unfortunately, I do think the
critics will like it and I think they are predisposed to praise Brown's work.
There will be no fooling the audience, though.
