I've seen Parade twice so far, and while I still not quite sure what I think of
the show itself, I think that the score is one of the most inventive and
beautiful to come to broadway in years. The thought that this is a "young"
score is silly. As a professional musician, I felt that Mr. Brown's use of
continually shifting meters and polytonal music show musical intellegence well
beyong his years. As for the chain gang number, I thought it was the best in
the show. Parade has a score that provides a listening exspirience not unlike
LaChuiza's Hello Again of Sondheim's Passion. It requires numerous listenings
to truly appreciate it. My hope is that this score will get the recognition it
truly deserves.
